Process and Final Work - Unison

INTRODUCTION

This page will take you through our creative journey for the 'Unison' piece we created as a big group as well as the final work itself

This will be an interesting way to both visualize and understand our creative process and the different ideas we came up with along the way and how we have used these ideas to get to the final product, exploring what worked and what did not.

Our ideas will be in different formats such as written posts explaining different ideas, video clips to show our progression with the material, and storyboards/structural decisions for the work.

GROUP CHOREOGRAPHY

Here is the link to the group choreography . With everyone's individual motif put together. This is the first cut of putting them all together , this was done so it would be easier for us all to learn the movement material , as a continuous phrase. Currently we are working different ways to storyboard the structure of this movement . Whether the final cut of this pieces is accumulative or split screen of different peoples phrases as once. This is a current work in progress. We are looking at old classic music upbeat music such as material girl by Madonna etc , that sort of aesthetic. We've also decided this piece to be filmed again in neutral colours such as black, grey and nudes . So this piece will look a lot more turned down colour wise to our bright top piece , highlighting the contrast.

CHOREOGRAPHY FOR GROUP PIECE

This choreography is for everyone to learn as we aim to make a film made up of each persons choreography in unison. It is a possibility that we may try to create a split screen film but this hasn't been decided yet.

IDEAS FOR UNISON TASK

In our unison piece of work, I like the idea of having one person dance a separate solo at the same time as people dancing the unison. This is because it adds an extra layer to the performance, which will make the performance more diverse and interesting to watch. Also, the idea of one person doing what they like at the side of others dancing in unison, is quite comical and will catch the attention of the viewer. In addition, I think it could be interesting to see one person standing still while others dance in unison. On the other hand, I do think that we should have moments of everyone dancing in unison at the same time as it will create a sense of togetherness at a time of national lockdown and with social distancing measures still in place.

STORYBOARD - SARAH

This first picture is a rough storyboard I have drawn after our lesson today, the colours on this one are purely there to show the transitions from certain frames into the next, and the blank boxes are the remaining people in that clip. I have drawn it for 12 people but it could be edited for 11 if needed. I have also numbered each box for the order to avoid confusion.

(These are all just rough ideas and can be changed around if people don't like it/ have different ideas, obviously we will all have different types of storyboards that we can look through next week so this is just a contribution to that)

The idea for Laura's into Bella's, is for the screen to 'zoom' into the 4 coloured boxes, getting rid of the remaining 7/8. This zoom then carries on into Ava's, leaving just 2 boxes. I haven't drawn a transition for Ava's into Amber's or Amber's into mine as I don't think it's needed, and we could see what looks best with Adam once we actually have the clips. The pattern of 5 for my phrase would extend out adding 4 more people for Macy's, and the rest of the phrases would follow the same process as these 6 have.

In this second picture I have colour coded each small box to represent a 'person' to show how the transitions could work with the whole group. Obviously these can be changed around depending on who was wanting to do what, it is just a rough idea to see how it could work.

The coloured boxes being placed within one persons phrase do not necessarily mean that colour is doing that phrase (for example, the green in Bella's phrase could be doing a solo while the other 3 are doing the unison etc.)

Drawing this I have also realised that in order for us to be able to explore having fewer boxes on the screen, 2/3/4/5 etc, there are only a limited amount of phrases each person could be in to keep it fair, so for this example I have put each colour in 6 phrases.

Another idea which could follow this same sort of structure, could be the canon which Mollie suggested whereby each phrase adds a person in, so Laura would perform hers on her own, and then Bella is added in to do Bella's phrase as a duet, and then Ava etc. As we add people in, it would still be possible to break off for solos within the unison (eg 5 people in Macy's do the unison phrase while one person does a different solo)

I hope this is clear!

STORYBOARD - MOLLIE

These are just a few ideas I have come up with for the layout of the split-screen for our project.

I have decided that these frames can come after we have performed the piece from beginning to end in unison so these frames can be used in any configuration to add layers to the piece.

Storyboard 1;

For this frame, I have decided to have two dancers performing Becky's phrases alongside each other in the frame but instead of just performing this phrase next to each other, I think it would be interesting to have one video flipped, preferably to have both dancers facing into each other to possible give off the illusion that between both videos there is a mirror.

Storyboard 2;

For this frame, I have decided to have four videos on the screen in a square formation, with three videos being the same phrase being performed in unison - the unison phrase I have decided to use is Laura's. For the final video, I thought it would be interesting to break up the frame and have someone perform a completely new phrase, this will also help to add layers and textures to the frame as it allows the viewer to be drawn to each performer as opposed to all dancers performing unison and just watching the performer who 'stands out' because by seeing someone perform a completely fresh and new solo it will draw out the individuality and personality that all the performers bring as we will all be performing the unison phrases slightly different due to our own movement personality as well as space we have available to us.

Storyboard 3;

For this frame; I wanted to explore the idea of accumulative canon that I had proposed last week. My idea is, to begin with, one phrase on the screen performing their own phrase, then adding another phrase into the frame and having both dancers performing dancer 2's phrase, then finally adding the third phrase into the frame and having all three dancers performing dancer 3's phrase. I also think configuring each video in a diagonal line will add an extra visual to the frame as well as adding layers and textures to the choreography by using accumulative canon.

STORYBOARD IDEAS - AVA

Storyboard 1:

For this frame, I have decided to place two dancers in the split screen, who will dance Laura’s solo material. The two dancers will dance Laura’s material in unison but the video on one screen will be flipped, to create the illusion of the two dancers facing each other. I think this idea will work well with Laura’s material as she does a lot of movement facing the corner. This has come from the idea of creating a sense of togetherness, which I have mentioned in another post because by having the frames positioned in this way it will create an on-screen connection.

Storyboard 2:

Also, focusing on the idea of creating a sense of togetherness, I have decided that we could have one frame where all 12 dancers are on screen at one time dancing in unison. To extend the idea of togetherness, I think all dancers should dance in similar costume or abide by a certain colour theme and each box/ frame should be as close to each other as possible.

STORYBOARD IDEA - BELLA

Hi guys, this is my storyboard idea. The bigger squares represent the screen and what will be seen and the smaller squares inside represent each individual dancer. The orange colour/ boxes represent the unison phrases that we have learnt (e.g Laura's phrase, Ava's phrase etc) and the boxes follow the order of the unison phrase. The pinkish colour represents moments where I thought people could break off from the unison phrase and do some different movement or choreography, this could even be improvisation. There are moments in my storyboard (Frame 1, frame 5, frame 8 and frame 15) where everybody does the unison phrase, as well as one frame where everybody is doing improv or other movements. I have annotated on my diagram moments that may seem unclear from just looking at the diagram.

AN IDEA FOR THE STORYBOARD - BECKY

I found this video of dance students from the university of Chichester, using the same type of methods wee were speaking on when talking about stop motion, wide lens angles. These guys seem to switch screens a lot and I like the idea they are all doing the same dance but in different spaces in their homes, I also. noticed the use of cannon via. video edit and. I thought that is a fun method to use?

Have a look and see what you think? Just an idea but I thought it was good to think about visuals in relations to sound maybe or even no sound?

STORYBOARD IDEA - MACY

My idea for the storyboard was to begin the phrase with one person (Laura as her phrase is first) and then each persons phrase we go into, that person whose phrase it is, joins in. I have colour coordinated everyone (the key for the colours is what colour I have underlined their name with) and then I have drawn a diagram to show how it would work. This means that the amount of people dancing would increase gradually. The benefits of this would be that not everyone would have to learn everyones phrase, as I know that people was struggling with this, (except Laura, however she said last week that she felt confident with them all).

We could also work together to look into how to design the video format, and how our videos would be spaced in the final cut.

STORYBOARD IDEA - DAISY

Key:

purple= unison

pink=solo

yellow= repeat a previous solo

Section 1: Everyone in unison performing Laura's solo

Section 2: A diagonal line bottom left to top right , all performing Bella's solo

Section 3: Diagonal line remains performing Ava's solo, then a box top left that repeats Bella's solo and a box bottom right doing solo.

Section 4: Outside boxes perform Amber's solo

Section 5: Everyone does their own solo

Section 6: One box central doing Sarah's solo

Section 7: 4 in a line repeating Sarah's

Section 8: 3 in a line doing Macy's solo, 2 in the upper line to the left 1 solo,1 repeats amber solo, 1 box bottom right solo.

Section 9: same formation , all do Daisy's solo apart from bottom right who repeats same solo or does a different solo.

Section 10: same formation, All do Molly's solo in unison.

Section 11: 2 boxes bottom left, 2 boxes upper right all repeat Molly's phrase.

Section 12 : 3 boxes top line, 3 boxes bottom line , staggered solo and unison doing Becky's phrase .

Section 13: Formation like a 5 on a dice with big centre , 1 solo in the middle , 4 around the edge doing Tyler's solo.

Section 14: Everyone in unison on the screen performing Olivia's solo.

I am hoping that this storyboard will create a video performance piece with a dynamic that gets busier and then calms down before getting busier again, and will create a sense of togetherness. I'm hoping that the piece changes enough to be engaging for the audience without being that busy the audience becomes overwhelmed and loses interest.

ACCUMULATION - STORYBOARD IDEA FOR UNISON - MOLLIE

This is a rough idea of the first structural decision for the unison piece, the idea I have attempting to articulate is this idea of accumulation of people while the unison piece develops from Laura down to Olivia. The configurations of the squares can change if anyone comes up with different ones to create exciting visuals but this is just a frame work to explain this accumulation.

To break it down further using the first 4 phrases as an example;

Laura will dance her solo alone

Bella will join her and the both of them will perform Bella’s phrase only

Ava will join these 2 and the three of them will perform Ava’s phrase only

Then finally Amber will join these 3 and the four of them will perform Amber’s phrase only

Therefore, you are only required to learn and film the sections from yours onwards, separately.

REHEARSAL FOOTAGE - UNISON GROUP

Here is the link to the zoom rehearsal of the group unison piece:

https://leedsbeckett-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/l_nuttall4674_student_leedsbeckett_ac_uk/Ec1GCuwWHS1Lr9sy81L_STMBg34CIzsG6iy7q-Jpbi-XlQ?e=Va7dKd

Rehearsing a group piece of material via zoom , I found very challenging but also rewarding. As the most difficult part was trying to keep the timing together and the sense of direction, as on zoo some camera's are flipped and some aren't . Not only that but because the material was fairly new to us all at this point you can see many of us trying to watch each other through the screen for timings etc , which I think sometimes made us more confused. However this footage was one of the first times we put everyone's parts together into the big unison phrase , which i believe was one of the reasons some parts are delayed or unknown as this piece was still a work in progress.

In this footage , it is myself counting the counts for everyone , and as you can tell it doesn't always go to plan as sometimes I think I'm going to fast or too slow as a result of trying to watch everyone through a screen , but all in all I think it was a good first practise . Also from looking from this footage to our final piece you can see the work and effort and progress that has been made to improve and finalise our work.

LAURA PHRASE IN UNISON GROUP

My initial inspirations started from watching Mark Morris dance group in anger dance - Anger Dance - Mark Morris Dance Group - YouTube

While i was watching the clip I was looking at the way in which they used the camera and editing the angles etc. Noticing that they used close up angles of the body , to a specific body part for example a hand or foot , head and more. From that point that idea was in my head as it was something different that we haven't worked on  As before this we'd constantly be working in a full body angle/movement but never zoomed in to see just how effective one part of the body could be . Therefore my plan was to pick a movement from each persons unison phrase and zoom into that part of the body  e.g. (Bella flicks her leg , so then I zoomed into the lower part of the leg so you could only see that phrase through that angle not the full body. As far as getting the footage . I then decided to think into presentations and editing . looked into Edward Muybridge who was and English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion

I was most intrigued by his layout of these images.

show an example of the split screens I was inspired to use to show the close up footage.
